Volunteer Opportunity on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (January 18)

Posted on: January 7th, 2016 by Anastasia Miller

Please join the Student Conservation Association (SCA) in honoring the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 18th. On MLK Day, event participants will join together in service to restore Anacostia Park in southeast Washington, DC. This project is one of SCA’s signature service events, presented with our National Park Service Centennial premier partner, American Express, with the additional objective of urging all Americans to “Find Your Park.” This project will also help close the growing gap between today’s youth and the great outdoors, promote good physical and mental health, and advance the “Let’s Move! Outside”/Play, Learn, Serve and Work initiative championed by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama.

WHEN: Monday, January 18th, 9:30 am to 1:30 pm

WHERE: Anacostia Park, 1500 Anacostia Drive SE, Washington, DC 20020. (Registration and kick-off will take place in front of the Skating Pavilion.)

WHAT: Volunteers will help with a massive river clean-up, removing trash and debris from the shoreline to improve the health of the Anacostia River.

BRING WITH YOU: Wear long pants and sturdy shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring extra layers as the event will take place in any weather! Please also bring your own water bottle for staying hydrated.

PROVIDED: SCA will supply breakfast and lunch for volunteers as well as work gloves and all project supplies. Free Find Your Park t-shirts will be provided for the first 500 volunteers to register!

REGISTRATION: Please sign up at http://FindYourParkSCAdc.eventbrite.com to complete the online waiver.

QUESTIONS: Contact Lori Robertson, SCA Events Manager, at lrobertson [at] thesca.org or 973-868-2189.
