Walls seniors Jacob Ausubel, Max Mellott, and Liza Murdoch were honored guests at an Oct. 28 celebration of the 40th anniversary of the passage of DC’s Home Rule Act, which gave city residents the right to vote for mayor and city council. The three students received 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awards, respectively, in the District of Columbia Home Rule Essay Contest (the three are pictured below with history teacher Kerry Sylvia on the left).

At the Wilson Building event, the trio met a number of prominent DC leaders, including Mayor Vincent Gray, former mayors Marion Barry and Sharon Pratt Kelly, mayoral candidates Muriel Bowser and Carol Schwartz, and City Council Chairman Phil Mendelson.

Congratulations to our winning essayists!
