SWW: Response to Working Group from DCPS

Posted on: December 23rd, 2013 by Admin

Dear School Without Walls Community,

On Friday, December 20, we received the following letter (see below) from DCPS Chief of Schools John Davis to the recommendations of the working group on the merger. Most notably, Mr. Davis acknowledged the challenges of having SWW high school students take classes at Francis Stevens, and he announced that DCPS will not pursue this for the 2014-2015 school year. Mr. Davis also noted that the shared leadership structure has created challenges and DCPS will work to address them.

Thanks are due to the many parents who attended town halls and HSA meetings over the past year, and to those who stepped up this week to contact Mayor Vincent Gray, Deputy Mayor Abigail Smith, Chancellor Kaya Henderson, Councilman David Catania and others. Your responses were inspiring.

Thanks also are due to DCPS, and especially John Davis, for coming to speak with SWW parents this week, for listening to our serious concerns about the merger, and for his quick response that reflected our concerns.

To be clear, Mr. Davis’ letter expresses a commitment to maintaining the merger, and it leaves open the option of having high school students take classes at Francis Stevens in the 2015-2016 school year. We as parents will need to remain involved in this issue to ensure that the integrity of School Without Walls High School is maintained. The HSA will keep you updated on new developments and will seek your input and assistance at each step of the way.

Sincerely and Happy Holidays,

SWW Working Group
