SWW HSA: General Meeting at 6:30 p.m. on December 17

Dear Parents,

On Tuesday December 17 the SWW HSA will hold a general parent meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the Common Room at school. We urge you in the strong possible way to make this meeting a priority, even though this is a busy time of year.

We will discuss the status of the merger of our high school with Francis Stevens, an issue that has not yet been settled. A working group including parents and faculty from both campuses released its recommendations a month ago, but we have not yet received a response from DCPS. We do not know what they plan to do next school year.

That concerns us. And we think it should concern you.

As you know, our working group sent recommendations to DCPS on November 12. Based on extensive deliberations, we recommended that no high school students attend classes at Francis Stevens. We also recommended that sharing leadership and administrative functions between the two campuses need to be given further consideration, as we have cataloged a number of problems. Finally, we recommended that increased enrollment at SWW be done in a thoughtful way that considers use of George Washington University space and alternatives to the current schedule.

We believe it would be helpful to provide a thorough briefing to you on the findings of the working group and to consider next steps for the parent community. We ask you to come prepared to offer your thoughts, ideas and commitment to those next steps.

Respectfully,

Jean Boland, HSA President                                    Ed Lazere, LSAT Co-Chair
