Counselors’ Bios

Hafsatu Iro

Mrs. Hafsatu Iro is a Certified Practical Counselor (K-12). She received a B.A. in education from Bayero University and a master’s in education (Guidance and Counseling) from Howard University.

Mrs. Iro has invested over 16 years providing community and school based counseling services to youth, children, and families in the District of Columbia. She has served in various nationwide initiatives, including the Comprehensive Child Development Project and the Early Head Start Program. Prior to joining the DC Public School System, she served for five years as a Program Director for the District of Columbia Teen Pregnancy Prevention Project, a partnership with the DC Department of Health and the District of Columbia Public and Charter Schools. She joined the DCPS System at Hine Junior High and later J.F.Cooke Elementary School as a Reading Resource Teacher.

Mrs. Iro became a school counselor at School Without Walls in 2008 as a 9th and 11th grades counselor. In addition to her role as a senior counselor last year, she served as the counselor and advisor of the exchange students from around the globe that come to the Schools Without Walls to study each year. She remains the founder and a co-sponsor of the School Without Walls Exchange Students Club. She participated in the Reading Across Continents Project, a pilot project funded by the State Department that connects School Without Walls students with students in Ghana and Nigeria. Mrs. Iro is the current freshman counselor of the 2010-2011 school year. She is also responsible for coordinating the parent teacher conferences. Her other roles include a member of the Walls Advisory Design Team. She was the coordinator of the Student Support Team and currently a co-coordinator.

Kathryn Moore

Ms. Kathryn Moore is the School Counselor for the Class of 2016. Ms. Moore received her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Education from Cornell University. She earned her Master’s degree in Couple and Family Therapy from the University of Maryland, College Park, and her Post-Master’s Certificate in School Counseling from the George Washington University. Prior to joining School Without Walls as a School Counselor, Ms. Moore obtained her Graduate License in Marriage and Family Therapy and gained experience working with children and families on a variety of personal and social issues. She is currently a member of the American School Counselor Association and is a Licensed School Counselor in the District of Columbia.
