Reminder: Paper Metro Cards Discontinued 12/31

The School Transit Subsidy Program wants to remind students and parents about Metro’s transition to an entirely paperless farecard program.

  • Metro farecard machines stopped selling paper farecards on December 3, 2015.
  • Metro will stop selling paper farecards at their sales offices (and in bulk) on December 31, 2015. This includes regular paper farecards and discounted student paper farecards, including the $1.90 two-trip rail pass, the $9.50 10-ride pass, and the $30.00 monthly pass.
  • Starting January 2016, Metro will only sell electronic fare media that are loaded onto a SmarTrip card or a DC One Card.
  • In early March 2016, Metro will stop accepting paper fare cards altogether.

Walls students should use their DC One Cards for school transit. Remaining value on paper farecards can be transferred to a SmarTrip card or DC One Card.
