2013 Sports Banquet
On Sunday, June 9, more than 275 members of the School Without Walls’ Community gathered at the North Hall of Eastern Market to celebrate and recognize the School’s Mighty Penguins – the SWW athletes who contributed to the success of their team, their school, and their community. Sports at Walls is an integral part of the fabric of the School with 251 students participating in 28 sports teams and clubs. The Sports Banquet was an excellent opportunity to recognize the important role that sports can play in a student’s life, and we heard numerous examples of how sports can instill discipline, unity, and life skills like leadership and teamwork. We also heard about how playing sports can positively impact academics, and it is important to note, that almost half of all SWW athletes have a 3.5 GPA or better. During the Banquet, two athletes were recognized for achieving Honorable Mention All-Met status by the Washington Post, Gabi Lahti in Softball and Deja Steward in Tennis. This is a huge honor as it places these Walls’ athletes among the elite in the greater Washington community.
The evening culminated with the presentation of the Mighty Penguin Award which is given annually to the senior female and senior male athlete who best exemplify the spirit of the School Without Walls both on and off the field. These students exhibit a true love of sports and a commitment to athletics, leadership, scholarship, and community.
