Help Send Walls’ Ensemble Concert Choir to Cuba

Posted on: April 8th, 2016 by Anastasia Miller

Walls’ award-winning ensemble concert choir has been presented with a unique opportunity. Our performers have received an invitation from the Cuban Ministry of Culture to participate in a prestigious choral music exchange program at the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory in Havana from May 28 to June 2, 2016. They will be developing professional-level vocal techniques under the supervision of teaching artists from both countries, culminating in performances with Cuban students from the Centro Nacional de Escuelas de Arte–Visual and Performing Arts Schools. Our students will act as cultural ambassadors for Walls and the United States, and experience life in a country few in the United States have seen in more than 50 years.

As much as we welcome this honor and one-of-a-kind experience, we also recognize that it poses a challenge. The choir draws students from all over the District. As you can imagine, many families in the choral program aren’t able to afford the cost of the travel and in-country living expenses. We would like all of our students to be able to make this unique journey, regardless of financial circumstance. We have set the ambitious goal of raising enough money to cover the visas, travel, lodging, and tour costs for the trip (each family will contribute $500.00 per student).

The choir will also be soliciting funding at local events throughout March and April, concluding with a high-profile benefit concert on May 20, 2016.
