Iro, Hafsatu

Hafsatu Iro has invested more than 16 years providing community and school based counseling services to youth, children, and families in the District of Columbia. She has served in various nationwide initiatives, including the Comprehensive Child Development Project and the Early Head Start Program. Prior to joining DCPS, she served for five years as a program director for the District of Columbia Teen Pregnancy Prevention Project, a partnership with the DC Department of Health and the District of Columbia Public and Charter Schools. She joined the DCPS at Hine Junior High and later worked at J.F. Cooke Elementary School as a reading resource teacher.

Mrs. Iro is a certified practical counselor (K–12). She earned a BA in Education from Bayero University and an MA in Education (Guidance and Counseling) from Howard University. She joined School Without Walls in 2008 as a 9th – and 11th- grade counselor. Last year, Mrs. Iro served as a senior counselor and as the counselor and advisor to exchange students attending Walls.

She is the founder and a co-sponsor of the School Without Walls Exchange Students Club. She participated in the Reading Across Continents Project, a pilot project funded by the State Department that connects School Without Walls students with students in Ghana and Nigeria. She is also responsible for coordinating the parent teacher conferences. Her other roles include a member of the Walls Advisory Design Team. She was the coordinator of the Student Support Team and is currently a co-coordinator.
